Paragraphs and line breaks
A blank line starts a new paragraph. A single line break stays a line break: what you write on the next line is drawn on the next line, in the same paragraph.
A line ends where you end it.
This line is the same paragraph, one line down.

This one is a new paragraph.
GitHub joins those two lines into one when it shows a file; Tisty keeps them apart. A backslash at the end of a line breaks it everywhere.
To write a line that would otherwise start something — a heading, a list, a quote — put a backslash before it: \#, \-, 1\., \>.
